The GRI Framework
The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) ”G3” (third generation) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines are the worldwide standard for corporate reporting on social and environmental performance.
The GRI framework was developed through an international, multi-stakeholder process, and adopted early by major corporations such as General Motors, Hewlett-Packard, and Johnson & Johnson. Its comprehensive guidelines include principles for ensuring report content and quality, and define 49 core performance indicators along with 30 additional indicators and sector supplements.

Organizations that use the framework declare a report level — C, C+, B, B+, A, or A+ — corresponding to the degree of thoroughness and third-party assurance achieved. Reports include three types of standard disclosures: organizational profile, performance indicators, and management approach.
Key advantages of the GRI framework are:
It provides credibility.
A standard framework allows data to be compared over time and among companies, and ensures that analysts can find the information they expect. In addition, the GRI framework includes stakeholder perspectives, not just company interests or achievements, helping to enhance shareholder confidence.
It helps improve performance.
Companies cannot implement the GRI framework without addressing their core business strategy and integrating sustainable practices and measures in every area, thereby improving operational efficiencies.
It encourages transparency.
The GRI framework helps companies define and communicate sustainability policies both internally and externally, so that when public issues arise, they can show what they are doing to mitigate risks—and be held accountable.
As a GRI Organizational Stakeholder, Covive is intimately familiar with the guidelines and is participating in their ongoing evolution.
We have the expertise to help our clients avoid paralysis in the face of what can be an overwhelming process, and answer questions such as “How do I collect all that information?” “How do I present it in a way that doesn’t create more problems?” and “What if GRI indicators don't apply to our business?” We can also provide third-party assurance.
